For the second time this season, NAU's CSE (Center for Sustainable Environments) has garnered praise from the New York Times. On January 9, 2006, the Times featured NAU as one of twelve campuses leading the way in greening America's universities, and praised the inclusive process that the Campus Sustainability Committee developed to gain broad participation in implementing a campus-wide sustainability initiative. Rather than attempting a top-down approach to campus sustainability, CSE's Director Gary Nabhan explained that "We let the people on campus come up with ideas about how to use less, and we listen to them." The deputy director of CSE, Dr. Gary Deason, has found "ambassadors for sustainability" in virtually every constituency at NAU, from students, to professional staff, to groundskeepers, faculty and administrators. The New York Times article also noted Nabhan's observation that "A huge portion of our student body is motivated to be engaged in environmental issues [and] wants to live on a campus that reflects their values." Nabhan was alluding to Outside magazine's rating of NAU being among the top ten schools in the country for students seeking to integrate outdoor adventure and field studies into their undergraduate experience. The Grand Canyon Semester and the Center's own field courses are but two of NAU's many nationally recognized programs in this domain. To view the
