CATALYST Associate Elizabeth Lassuy Attends 2007 Natural Building Colloquium

PRESCOTT, AZ– I recently spent four dirt and music filled days in Kerrville, Texas (home of the famous folk-music festivals) at part of the 2007 Natural Building Colloquium (NBC)– an annual event that occurs at varying locations throughout the west. (There is an annual eastern NBC too.)

Presenters and attendees alike got down and dirty building structures scattered across the Quiet Valley Ranch using locally available materials such as straw, clay, timber (on-site standing dead trees), stone, and even sand – as well as recycled materials including pallet-wood, barn wood, glass bottles, and much more.

This year’s NBC presenters featured some of the classics on the NBC circuit such as Matts Myhrman and Judy Know (grandparents of the Strawbale movement); SunRay Kelley (wood sculpting nature man); Doni Kiffmeyer and Kaki Hunter (with their amazing earthbag fun); Carole Crews (natural paints & finishes and one-of-a-kind wall sculptings);  Steve Kemble and Mollie Curry (natural buildings and deep ecology teachers); Frank Meyer (thangmaker and musician extraordinaire); David Eisenberg (a true mystic - changing the world one building official at a time and inspiring us all!); Kiko Denzer (creating cob ovens); Pete Fust (the big bamboo teacher).  There were also some truly entertaining new faces as presenters: Joseph Jenkins talking crap – no really – his book “The Humanure Handbook” is in its third edition and published in many languages.

Professor Lakshman Yapa’s discussion of the ‘discourse of poverty’ was mind-shifting in its implications of how to create health, dignity and community for us all – wow!  Licensed architect and affordable housing advocate Alfred von Bachmayr and side-kick Dafyd Rawlings discussed the World Hands Project where they work with local populations along the Mexico/US border - building housing and other civic projects using natural and salvaged materials such as a pallet wood truss system. These are just a hand full of the many oh-so-skilled and oh-so-fun people that presented.  If you ever get a chance to participate in a Natural Building Colloquium (east or west) do give yourself this sweet time to make new friends, hang with old friends, share great meals and amazing music, it’s definitely a gift of time to play, share, learn, play, get dirty, play, dance, play.

You get the idea.
