CATALYST Completes Design Phase for 16,000 Sq. Ft. LEED-Platinum Visitor's Center

LOS BANOS, CA- Since March of this year, CATALYST has been hard at work designing a new Visitor's Center for the San Luis National Wildlife Refuge in California. The Refuge currently operates out of a strip mall in nearby Los Banos. Home to Tule elk and huge populations of migratory waterfowl, the San Luis NWR has been recognized as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance, an Audubon Important Bird Area, and as a Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network site.

CATALYST Principals Matt Ackerman and Jeff Zucker traveled to California multiple times to visit the site and facilitate a series of design charrettes with the US Fish and Wildlife staff. These intensive, engaging brainstorming sessions led to the production of detailed bubble diagrams and, on an expedited schedule, a conceptual building design that reflects the needs and desires of the US Fish and Wildlife Service.

The visionary design by Matt Ackerman incorporates references to the natural features of the site and greater environs of the San Joaquin Valley, while incorporating the necessary energy efficiency and site sensitive design features to achieve LEED-Platinum certification. With towering, exposed posts and beams, a dramatic glass walled entry pod takes its cue from the vernacular architecture of the surrounding farming community. Curving walls undulate like the oxbows of the San Joaquin River. Roof monitors holding photo voltaic arrays soar like the many wings of birds taking flight. The building itself walls off one section of the Tule elk enclosure, allowing visitors and staff alike to covertly view the elk from inside the building.

In a letter to principal Matt Ackerman, Wildlife Refuge Manager Kim Forrest comments that;

"Catalyst has done an excellent job in designing a structure to standards while looking to minimize operations and maintenance costs...The design of both the Visitor Center and the office complex offer a welcoming and efficient atmosphere for the public and FWS staff, greatly capitalizing on the attractive views and visitor opportunities of the site." She goes on to state that, "The floor plan is efficient and logical, despite the multitude of demands on this fairly complex building...The sheer size of the building could easily lend itself to a design that is warehouse-like and very unattractive and forgettable; however, you have created a building that is as beautiful and memorable as it is functional."
