CATALYST To Assist Miller Valley School With "Green" Mural Project PRESCOTT, AZ- Funded in
part by a grant from Safe Routes to School through the Prescott
Alternative Transportation organization, the Prescott Downtown Mural
Project's Mural Mice are at it again. With great successes in their
portfolio including the 'Mural Beyond Words' at the Prescott Public
Library, Mural Mice R.E. Wall and Pamela Smith have begun to facilitate
a series of discussions with the children, faculty, and staff of Miller
Valley Elementary School to develop content and concepts for their new
"Go On Green" mural project. At the first of four scheduled discussions, community members Lisa Packard of the Highlands Center for Natural History and CATALYST ARCHITECTURE Principal Matthew Ackerman helped to orient the staff and students to 'green' concepts. Packard advised the group on the region's plants, animals and habitat. Ackerman helped to expand the group's understanding of sustainability to include how we interface with our natural world through the design and construction of the built environment. Other ideas suggested by students, staff and Mice included biking and walking to school, artistic interpretations of the 4 elements, and Miller Valley School's 'commitment to green'. Along with a monetary contribution and
Ackerman's time, CATALYST will
be providing a 3-D computer model of the school for use in presenting
mural concepts to the school board and public. The father of six year
old Jasmine, Ackerman enjoyed his time with the children talking about
a topic so close to his heart and work. "Hearing the students ideas of
what 'green' means to them is very insightful" he says with a
chuckle. R.E. Wall mirrors this sentiment. "I like working with
the schools," says Wall. "We tell [the children] to paint the world
they want to live in."
