Principal Ackerman Presents Sustainable Planning Concepts to Local Leadership Groups
PRESCOTT, AZ- Speaking recently at the Prescott Area Leadership's
"Government and Issues Day", CATALYST Principal Matt Ackerman riveted
the group with a discussion of the place of the youth and elderly in
our communities--and the roles that community planning and policy play
in that discussion. His presentation focused on the need to move beyond
'green building' into systems-design at a community level. Stated
Ackerman, "You can have the greenest building in the world, but unless
we're dealing with sustainability on a planning level (how we're
actually laying out our communities), we're not getting the job done."
Community planning for sustainability involves such ideas as energy
distribution, food production, water conservation and transportation
issues--as well as consideration and support for mixed uses and higher
densities in new development.Ackerman spoke along with the Mayors of each of the Quad Cities, Yavapai County Supervisor Chip Davis, and Secretary of State Ken Bennett. The group was so inspired that the following speaker began his time by acknowledging the importance of Ackerman's presentation; stating that he wanted to encourage further discussion on the topic and would no longer be speaking about his pre-selected topic. Slated to be a featured speaker at the
Central Arizona Renewable Energy
Network's (CAZREN) upcoming Green Business Forum, Ackerman's proven
leadership in community level planning issues fits into the evolution
of CAZREN's focus from the energy-efficiency of individual buildings to
their new emphasis on promoting sustainability at a planning level.Ackerman's background in Architecture and Urban Design includes a Bachelor of Science degree in Architecture from the Georgia Institute of Technology and Master of Architecture in Urban Design from the University of Texas at Austin. He served as Chair of the Mayor's 2050 Smart Growth Committee, which recommended the adoption of a form based code as an amendment to the City of Prescott's zoning code--an idea which received broad support from the City Council and the Community Development Committee. Ackerman also chaired the Yavapai County Sustainable Planning Committee, who's work effort resulted in ordinances adopted by the County to protect open space by encouraging cluster development and other sustainable planning practices.
